Today's Birthday 11/8

"Colin Parish" (2019-03-17)

Today's Birthday, August 11: Joe Rogan, US comedian, martial arts commentator and podcast host, (1967 - ).

Joe Rogan has let his passions steer the course for his life, and with great success.

After turning his love for stand-up comedy into multiple television roles, the teenage martial-arts champion ended up the star commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship for over a decade.

Today he hosts one of the most popular podcasts in the world, where a large portion of his guests talk extensively about another one of his favourite past-times, mind-altering substances.

Joe Rogan was born in Newark, New Jersey. His parents divorced when he was five. At 14 he took up karate, and five years later won the US Open Taekwondo Championships. Suffering from headaches he gave up his training at 21.

Cajoled onto the stage one night by his friends, Rogan relished his first taste of live-stand up comedy and relocated to Los Angeles in 1994 to pursue it full time.

He was cast as a handyman on the NBC sitcom show NewsRadio between 1995-1999, replacing Ray Romano. He continued his television career hosting Fear Factor between 2001-2006.

In 2003 Rogan joined Doug Stanhope taking over from Jimmy Kimmel for Comedy Central's The Man Show. Cancelled after just one season, Rogan later blamed executive producer Zoe Friedman for disregarding the comedians input and eventually running their jokes, and the show, into the ground.

His knowledge around martial arts continued to expand over the years encompassing jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts. In 1997 he began interviewing fighters backstage for the UFC. He was then hired as a commentator in 2002 and flourished as one of the most prominent voices in the sport until 2016.

A loud advocate for the use of drugs and psychedelics, he has appeared in documentaries on the topic including Marijuana: A Chronic History (2010) and DMT: The Spirit Molecule (2010).

Rogan started his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience with friend and fellow comedian Brian Redban in 2009. The pair started small, engaging with those in the martial arts community and comedy circuit. Over the years the guest pool has expanded to include mushroom experts, Egyptologists, triathlete vegans, porn stars and former LAPD cops.

In 2015 the podcast was downloaded on average 16 million times a month.
